VISVIM Subsequence Salon: A Celebration of Art, Fashion, and Craft in Tokyo

On September 7, 2024, VISVIM GENERAL STORE / VISVIM GALLERY in Nakameguro will host a special event celebrating the release of the latest issue of Subsequence Magazine—Vol. 7. This exclusive pop-up gallery event, titled Subsequence Salon Vol. 4, is a unique opportunity to experience and purchase carefully curated works of art and fashion that blend the timeless beauty of craftsmanship with contemporary expression.

What is Subsequence?

Subsequence is a biannual magazine published by the fashion brand VISVIM. Known for its meticulous attention to quality and thematic exploration, the magazine dives deep into topics that resonate with the passage of time, memory, and heritage. The theme for Vol. 7 is “Remember?”, inviting readers to reflect on small, personal histories that risk being forgotten in the flow of modern life. Through essays and rich visuals, the magazine brings together stories from around the world, celebrating the significance of these seemingly fleeting moments.

The new issue features contributions from notable figures such as writer Akiko Wakana, South Willard shop owner Ryan Conder, poet and anthropologist Fukuda Pero, and book collector/editor David Jacob Kramer. They explore themes of memory and legacy, from a forgotten mid-century Californian potter to the artisans who carry on folk art traditions in Mexico.

In addition to its thought-provoking content, Subsequence includes essays on VISVIM’s creative director Hiroki Nakamura’s tour of traditional Tokyo homes, a look at the small-town charm of Carmel-by-the-Sea in Northern California, and features on the creative spaces of designer Christina Kim and sculptor Raphaël Zarka.

Subsequence Salon Vol. 4: The Event

To mark the release of Vol. 7, Subsequence will hold Subsequence Salon Vol. 4, showcasing art and fashion photography by Samuel Bradley and Stephen Mann. Both creatives have been instrumental in shaping the aesthetic of VISVIM’s fashion pages since the magazine’s inception.

The exhibition will feature over ten of their works, including previously unpublished cuts, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process that makes Subsequence’s visuals so captivating. The pop-up gallery provides an intimate setting where visitors can not only view but also purchase these art pieces.

Bradley’s photography captures subtle, nuanced emotions, from the detailed textures of clothing to the quiet power of expression in his subjects’ faces. This exhibition marks the first time Bradley’s works will be displayed in Japan, making it a rare and exciting opportunity for art and fashion enthusiasts alike.
