Tokyo Endures Record-Breaking Heatwave: 10 Consecutive Days Above 35°C

Tokyo has just experienced its most intense heatwave on record, with temperatures soaring above 35°C for 10 consecutive days. This unprecedented streak, confirmed by the Japan Meteorological Agency, is the first of its kind since records began in 1875.

The heatwave began on August 18 and continued through August 27, with central Tokyo recording a peak temperature of 37.3°C on August 24. This marks the ninth consecutive day of temperatures exceeding 35°C, tying the capital’s longest heat streak on record, previously set from June 25 to July 3, 2022. The Japan Meteorological Agency attributes this prolonged heat to a persistent high-pressure system enveloping much of Japan, allowing strong sunlight to reach the ground.

The extreme temperatures have raised significant health concerns. Over 53,000 people have been hospitalised nationwide due to heatstroke, highlighting the severe impact of the heat on public health. In response, Tokyo’s public transportation systems and public facilities have implemented cooling measures, such as increased air conditioning and the distribution of water stations, to mitigate the effects of the heat on commuters and residents.

As the city continues to grapple with the effects of extreme temperatures, residents are encouraged to stay informed about heat-related risks and take necessary precautions to protect their health and well-being.
