Nintendo has done it again. Just four days after launching the long-awaited Switch 2, the Tokyo-based gaming giant has sold over 3.5 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling game console in history. Fans around the world lined up outside stores and flooded online retailers, eager to get their hands on the next generation of Nintendo gaming.

The Switch 2, which debuted on June 5, features major upgrades over its predecessor. It has a larger, full HD screen for handheld play, supports 4K resolution when docked, and includes more powerful internal hardware. A key new feature is GameChat, allowing players to voice or video chat with friends while playing. GameChat will remain free until at least March 2026, giving players plenty of time to test its capabilities.
The system launched alongside Mario Kart World, a new installment in the popular racing series with enhanced graphics, dynamic weather, and multiplayer races of up to 24 people. Another highly anticipated title, Donkey Kong Bananza, will arrive in July as a Switch 2 exclusive.

Despite a higher price—$449.99 in the U.S., with bundle prices going up to $499.99—demand has remained sky-high. In Japan alone, more than 2.2 million people entered a lottery for the console on launch day. Retailers struggled to keep up, and resale platforms like Mercari even had to temporarily ban Switch 2 listings to prevent price gouging and fraud.
Nintendo expects to sell at least 15 million units by March 2026, and industry analysts believe the Switch 2 could reach 66 million sales by 2028. This puts it well ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 5 and even Nintendo’s original Switch during their respective launch windows.
