Tokyo’s vibrant art scene welcomes a new exhibition by renowned artist Haroshi. Titled “ABACO,” this solo show opens on September 12, 2025, at Nanzuka Underground in Harajuku. It marks Haroshi’s third solo exhibition at the gallery, following “GUZO” (2017) and “I versus I” (2021).
Known for transforming discarded skateboards into intricate sculptures, Haroshi continues his exploration of overlooked objects in Japanese culture. In “ABACO,” he focuses on two traditional items: kokeshi dolls and abacus beads. These once-popular objects, now often found in thrift shops, symbolise the artist’s interest in preserving cultural heritage.
Haroshi’s creative process involves carving and assembling these materials into new forms, breathing life into items that have been forgotten by modern society. His work reflects a deep respect for the past and a commitment to sustainability.
